Greek Seleucid Kingdom 152-145 BC Alexander I Balas Silver Drachm NGC Ch Fine – Series VI

Alexander I Balas claimed the Seleucid throne by presenting himself as the son of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, with support from Rome, Pergamum, and Egypt, among others.

Once in power, Alexander sought to consolidate his rule through diplomatic marriages, including his union with Cleopatra Thea, daughter of the Egyptian king Ptolemy VI Philometor.

Alexander’s inability to effectively govern and maintain the support of his allies led to his downfall. He was eventually defeated by Demetrius II Nicator, the son of Demetrius I Soter, in battle. Alexander fled but was ultimately captured and killed in 145 BC
