Greek Capadocian AD 177-192 Commodus Silver Denarius NGC VF – Series VI

Commodus was the son of Marcus Aurelius. His reign began as co-emperor with his father in AD 177 and continued solely after Marcus Aurelius’s death in AD 180.

Commodus is infamous for his autocratic rule, obsession with gladiatorial games, and self-deification, claiming to be the reincarnation of Hercules and renaming Rome and its institutions after himself, which alienated the Senate and contributed to administrative neglect.

His reign ended with his assassination on December 31, AD 192, an act plotted by his inner circle, including his mistress and the Praetorian Prefect.
