Maurice is noted for his military campaigns against the Sassanian Empire, securing a significant peace treaty in 591 that returned much of the eastern territories to Byzantine control.

Maurice played a role in addressing religious disputes within the empire, including the Three-Chapter Controversy, striving to maintain unity between the Eastern and Western Churches.
