Alexander II Zabinas came to power with the support of Ptolemy VIII of Egypt, who promoted him as a contender for the Seleucid throne against Demetrius II Nicator.

His rule was marked by ongoing conflicts, both with rival Seleucid claimants and within the territories he controlled, as he sought to consolidate his power.

Alexander II Zabinas’s rule ended when he was defeated by Antiochus VIII Grypus, who had managed to gain ascendancy in the ongoing civil wars.
