Greek Seleucid Kingdom 162-150 BC Demetrius I Silver Drachm NGC VF – Series VI
Demetrius I ascended to the throne after escaping from Rome, where he was held as a hostage, a common practice among Hellenistic kingdoms to ensure treaties.
Demetrius I’s reign was characterized by numerous military campaigns aimed at reasserting Seleucid control over lost territories and defending against internal and external threats.
Despite his initial successes, Demetrius I’s policies and military campaigns eventually led to discontent among his subjects and the nobility. His reign ended with his defeat and capture by Alexander Balas, who claimed the throne with the support of Ptolemy VI of Egypt, among others.
